Over at the FTC, meanwhile, the agency has been flexing its antitrust muscles to prevent mergers in even the most obscurely defined markets, such as "superpremium ice cream," "jarred pickles," and "food service glassware."As those of us who follow the FTC know, the agency never tried to prevent a merger in the "jarred pickle" industry. They tried to prevent a merger in the refrigerated jarred pickle industry. In fact, the successfully prevented the merger. There is also a separate market for "shelf-staple" jarred pickles that apparently is not being monopolized by anyone.
