Remembering Columbus

Via Gus Van Horn, Scott Powell examines sculptor Giulio Monteverde's Colombo giovinetto (Young Columbus). The portrayal is fascinating, especially as one contemplates the myriad of reasons why a portrayal of that caliber would never be made today.

thank you, Nick, for the link to Scott's critical re-imagining of this sculpture. This is the sort of suggestive commentary that I would expect of a critic.
My quibble is with you: instead of imagining the myriad of reasons why this sort of work cannot be executed now, why not assert, advocate, and advance the arguments for doing this now, more than ever? Counsels of despair serve only decadence. Not what I signed on for..
